Surface Preparation: Generally it is best to remove as much rust as possible before application. The Rust Attack® will absorb and penetrate surface corrosion. But heavy corrosion must be removed to allow the Rust Attack® to fully penetrate through the corrosion. You can apply it to thick rust but keep in mind that the Rust Attack only reacts with rust that it is able to saturate. You may kill the rust on the surface and have a temporary solution, but for long-term results you will need to remove the corrosion to a thin layer that can be penetrated by the Rust Attack.
Application Procedures:
The process is simple
1) Remove rust by grinding, wire brush, or other standard methods if it is thick. No need to prepare surface only rust.
2) Apply the Rust Attack with a paint sprayer or brush. Apply a liberal amount of material or as much as possibly without drips or excess material on the surface.
3) Brush to evenly spread excess material
4) Allow first coat to dry 24 hours
5) Apply second coat with same method being careful to cover any spots that may have been missed on the first application
6) Brush to evenly spread any excess material
7) Wait 24 hours for the application of water-based top coats, 48 hours for polyurethane or solvent based top coats.
8) Apply protective top coat over the Rust Attack®
Note: Rust Attack acts as a tenacious primer for most industrial top coats. Rust attack may be used as a protective coating if it is not going to be exposed to UV light/sunlight or submerged under water. Most often Rust Attack® is used as a solution to stop the action of the rust and as a primer for protective top coats.
Coverage rate: Approximately 400 square feet per gallon.
Spray Application: For spray application, use a .0017 tip for large areas or a smaller tip for better material control on smaller surface areas.
Application Temperature Range: For application purposes, we recommend an ambient air temperature of 13-27 C. degrees. You can warm the surface with a heater but it is important not to reach surface temperatures over 27 C. or the material will dry too quickly and not have a chance to penetrate the corrosion and form the chemical conversion process. If you can control the surface temperature and ambient air temp around the surface to keep within the temperature range, then the materials can be applied in colder temperatures in a controlled environment.
Marine Applications: Rust Attack can be used as a solution to kill rust on submerged surfaces for metal ships, barges, etc. It is important to have a dry surface for application. You will need to achieve full cure of the Rust Attack, and then apply a protective top coat of marine quality coating. This marine quality top coat must be fully cured according to manufacture specifications and must be designed to be submerged.
